Simplifying Wine Education

It wasn’t till the end of my Sommelier program that I figured out what I wanted to do with my certification. While trying to convince a class of fellow sommelier students that affordable and consumer friendly brands are as vitally important to the wine industry as first growth Bordeaux’s, I discovered that my true passion was in simplifying wine education.

My journey with the world of wine all began with an inexpensive bottle of wine (as most peoples journey does), then jumps to my first winery tour while backpacking Australia. Upon returning home, a dear friend encouraged me to start my journey as a sommelier. After polishing my tasting skills and passing the course, I had the opportunity to work at Fox Harbr Resort where I had the opportunity to taste some of the world’s best wines.

After a summer of tasting vintage Bordeaux and serving Charles Barkley (he wasn’t much of a wine drinker) I joined the team at Bishop’s Cellar. Here I have had the opportunity to manage the retail store, travel to Alsace and Germany, educate eager wine students and now work on ways to make wine and wine education more accessible to all Nova Scotian’s via our website, classes and various events.

This brings me to the objective of this blog; to share my journey of continuous learning; through wine tastings, travel, educating and current events. I look forward to diving into various topics from the complex and factual debates like Does vintage really matter? To the lighthearted and more exciting topic such as The perfect $5 food to pair with Champagne. The topics will vary but I am hoping that each will be both educational and enjoyable.
