Tuscany
The picturesque countryside of rolling hills, the history, the art and the importance of the food and wine culture all position Tuscany as the number one Italian wine destination. Here the indigenous Sangiovese is showcased in various ways to produce the wines of Chianti, Vino Nobile di Montepulciano and Brunello di Montalcino. Sangiovese is also blended with French varietals like Cabernet and Merlot to create the great Super Tuscan wines like Sassicaia or Tignanello.
Although Tuscany is the third most planted region, its production volume is very low due to poor soils that result in low yields yet higher quality grapes and wines. Tuscany continues to be the center of Italian wine, benefitting from a unique blend of traditional and modern wine making.
