Right Bank: Saint-Emilion AC & Saint-Emilion Grand Cru AC

This is the largest of the districts on this side of the river with a range of vineyard areas that are distinct in terms of aspect and soil. Not surprisingly, the wines reflect these differences in terroir.  Cabernet Franc is more prevalent here and loves the well-drained gravelly limestone soils. There is a high proportion of clay here which works well for Merlot.  The best wines from low-yielding vineyards earn the title Saint-Emilion Grand Cru and are aged in expensive, new French oak.  The wines have moderate to high tannins, although the mouthfeel tends to have a richness and roundness that differs from the more angular left bank style.  Red and dark berries, plums, tobacco and cedar are all descriptors for these wines.
