Cote D’Or

This is the heart of Burgundy and divided into two distinct regions.

The Cote de Nuits to the north produces the fullest, long-living Pinot Noirs and home to all but one of this region’s Grand Cru appellations. Cote de Beaune in the south on the other hand produces some of the best dry wines in the world made from Chardonnay. Although white wine can be made in the Cote de Nuits and red wine in the Cote de Beaune, each area has its specialty.

The broad regional appellations are Bourgogne Rouge AC (Pinot Noir) and Bourgogne Blanc AC (Chardonnay) and provide simple, straightforward expressions of grape and place.  Villages of the Cote de Nuits and Cote de Beaune include:

Cote de Nuits

  • Chambolle Musigny AC (elegant and perfumed style)
  • Gevrey Chambertin AC (famous vineyards here are Chambertin, Chambertin Clos de Beze)
  • Vougeot AC (famous vineyards here are Clos de Vougeot)
  • Vosne-Romanee AC (famous vineyards here are Romanee-Conti, La Tache, La Romanee)
  • Nuits-Saint-Georges AC

A wine labelled as Cote de Nuits Villages is a red or white wine from vineyards on the Cote, but does not bear the name of the famous villages.

Cote de Beaune:

  • Aloxe-Corton AC (famous vineyards here are Corton, Corton Charlemagne)
  • Beaune AC
  • Pommard AC
  • Volnay AC
  • Meursault AC
  • Puligny-Montrachet AC (a famous vineyard here is  LeMontrachet)
  • Chassagne-Montrachet AC (a famous vineyard here is Le Montrachet)

A wine labelled as Cote de Beaune Villages is red only.  There are specific villages that must be blended together to make up this wine.
