Domaine la Florane owns 75.5 ha of land in the Southern Rhône, 38.5 ha dedicated to vines and the other 37 ha consisting of woodland, olive trees, and lavender. The vines are spread out over two appellations: Côtes-du-Rhône Villages Visan, (24 ha, south-facing, 280-380 metres) and Côtes-du-Rhône Villages Saint-Maurice (14.5 ha, north/north-east facing, 380-410 metres). Lead by head winemaker Adrien (along with his father, François), the family strives to let their vines grow as naturally as possible, respecting fauna and flora- they farm their vineyards according to the principles of the biodynamic calendar.
Tasting Notes
On the nose, red fruit occupy the bouquet- mainly cherry, cranberry, and raspberry. On the palate, red and black fruit dominant with wonderfully lively acidity. Pair with charcuterie, your favourite type of pizza, or service alongside a variety of grilled sausages.
Method
Made from a blend of Grenache, Syrah, Cinsault, and Carignan, the grapes come from vines grown at 300 metres altitude in clay-rich soils, and about 30 years old. Alcoholic fermentation in stainless steel vats, then aged on fine lees in concrete vats.
Our Thoughts
The winery is perfectly situated in an ecosystem of 40 hectares, 24 of which are planted to vineyards which are surrounded by truffle oaks and olive groves; a perfect environment to farm biodynamically. They have been organic certified since 2003 and biodynamic for just over five years. Harvest is done manually and the grapes are sorted twice before they start fermentation. The A Fleur de Pampre Rouge is an unoaked blend that is vinified in stainless steel and aged in concrete. Expect a surprisingly complex blend of blackberries and olives with soft tannins and a fresh finish.
