At the end of the 1800’s, Giuseppe Benanti, grandfather of Dr. Giuseppe Benanti, began the production of wines on one of his fathers old farms on the slopes of Mount Etna, at Viagrande in Catania. In 1988, Dr. Giuseppe Benanti revived the family’s old passion, with an extensive and selective study of the Etnean soils highly devoted to viticulture. He also investigated particular clones of indigenous vines and new oenological techniques to reproduce ancient fragrances using the most modern practices of vinification, in a perfect union of history and reality. Today Benanti is one of the most reputable producers of wine from this region. In 2012, twin brothers, Salvino and Antonia Benanti, took over their family’s wine estate.
The vineyards are located high above the ocean which creates ideal conditions for grape growing: with lots of sunlight, low rainfall; and high diurnal variation contributes to slow maturation and complex flavour development in the grapes. The soil is layers of powdery stone on top of hardened lava that drains well and forces the grapes to struggle to put down deep roots in search for nutrients and water. Benanti wines are truly an expression of this unique terroir. Minimal intervention in the vineyard, indigenous yeasts and a minimal use of new oak are the guiding principles of Benanti’s “slow wine” style.

Tasting Notes

The grapes are sourced from Caselle, on the eastern side of Etna as well as Cavaliere, on the southern side. The area is characterized by high rainfall and humidity with large temperature differences between night and day. The terrain is sandy, volcanic, rich in minerals with subacidic reaction. The wine is made from the indigenous Carricante grape grown as “alberello” or a free standing bush. This grape is only cultivated on Etna. Fermentation in stainless steel preserves the wine’s freshness.
Delicate aromas of tree fruit, ripe apple and flowers. The palate is dry with a pleasing acidity, chalky minerality and aromatic persistence.
