Intense aromas of dark chocolate, coffee, vanilla, cherries, strawberries, and black forest cake that lead into a full bodied palate of heavily roasted malt, black licorice, red fruits, and a surprisingly smooth mouthfeel. The Port barrel influence is balanced nicely by the richness of the base beer. Something to sip slowly, slightly chilled. Can be cellared for years to come, if desired.
Tawny Port is a no-brainier barrel to use for the maturation of a big imperial stout. As most imperial stouts have an underlying fruity component left from fermentation, it only makes sense that further ageing in a barrel once used to aged fortified red wine would help develop additional complexity and background fruitiness.
The Tawny Port Ra Ra Rasputin was aged in the barrel for a full 9 months, then tank conditioned for an additional three, before getting the same 2 month bottle cellaring treatment as the regular Ra Ra Rasputin.
