Bodegas Marta & Mate Pixide (750ml)
Castilla y Leon
Ribera del Duero
Founded in 2008, Bodegas Marta & Mate is a new winery in the northern part of Ribera del Duero and operated by a group of dynamic young players in the world of Spanish wine. The first wine it ever produced was awarded 95 points from Robert Parker. The star grape is Tinto Fino, the local name for Tempranillo. Estate-grown grapes are hand harvested in traditional 12kg baskets, crushed naturally by gravity and slowly fermented in conical tanks. Their winemaking combines the best of old world techniques and modern innovation.
Pixide offers an affordable option from one of our favourite premium Spanish producers, the grapes are sourced from younger vines where the the soil is sandy clay with high levels of limestone. The Tinto Fino (Tempranillo) grapes grapes ferment at low temperature to preserve the freshness and aromatic character of the wine before it ages for six months in a combination of French and American barrels. The result is a fruit forward, fresh and balanced red. It’s a wonderful cross-over red that pairs easily with white meats and sausages, but will not overwhelm light salads or even sushi.
As the days grow shorter and the nights grow longer, I’m starting to move toward richer, more full-bodied food and wine but I’m still not ready to break out the heavy Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah just yet. Pixide is a super affordable option from an incredible producer in the Ribera del Duero region of Spain. The dark fruit is juicy and fresh with a slight sweetness from oak spices and a delicious spine of minerality that I just love from the Ribera del Duero region. Let this wine brighten up your cold and windy nights.
