Ginny Povall was born and raised in Boston, Massachusetts and began making wine at home as a hobby.  She eventually made her way to South Africa to pursue her passion to make wine on a larger scale and she planted vines on Protea Heights Farm, located in Devon Valley, about 10 minutes outside the center of Stellenbosch.  Back in  the 1940s, this was the first farm in South Africa to grow protea flowers, which is the country’s national flower and Ginny decided to dedicate a fraction of her property to protea cultivation.  The vineyards were freshly planted in 2009 and 2010 and her winery just now coming into steady production and from her inaugural vintage, she has garnered well deserved attention.  She practices sustainable viticulture and minimal intervention throughout the winemaking process.  The Botanica range of wines have as much personality as their vibrant and charming winemaker.

Tasting Notes

The nose shows lime, green apple plus a little thatch typical of the variety while the palate is pleasantly lean with pure fruit and lively acidity.

The inspiration for the name of the wine and design of the labels was a trip to the Yale Center for British Art. An exhibit of Mary Delany’s work, a remarkable series of botanical collages that are beautifully crafted with hundreds of tiny pieces of cut paper was breathtaking. I am fortunate to have licensed a few of her collages and created these beautiful labels with her art as the primary focal point. Mary was 72 when she created these pieces in the late 1700’s.  – Ginny Povall, Winemaker

Our Thoughts

Mary Delaney Semillon is an intriguing offering from Botanica Wines located in Stellenbosch, South Africa.  A gorgeous vineyard that also functions as a farm, growing beautiful protea flowers unique to the property, their wines are appropriately gorgeous (not to mention organic + biodynamic!).  This particular line features artwork from the 1700s by Mary Delany.

This Semillon has spent a little time in barrel and its lees, giving it a kiss of butter and creaminess though it also boasts a healthy acidity to keep itself in balance.  You’ll find notes of waxy pear-like fruit, green apple, and a hint of nuttiness- a nod to where this wine is going with age, which is a richer yet still light-on-its-feet kinda direction!  This is a complex, textural wine that is lovely on its own or would also shine with any white fish, soft cheeses, or light vegetarian fare.
