Brasserie De Ranke, founded in 1996, brews all of its beers in its own facilities in Dottignies, in the province of Hainaut in Belgium. Through both years of training and dedication, and extremely high ethical, ecological and sustainable standards, they have cemented themselves as one of the best modern breweries to come out of Belgium.
The brewery uses exclusively local raw materials, hops from the region of Poperinge and malt from Belgian malting houses. They also prioritize the happiness of their neighbours and staff above profitability: they don’t work nights, or do shift rotations. de Ranke always strives to maintain the best environment possible, so both the neighbours and the staff can be proud on their local brewery, and the beers created here. We’ll drink to that!
Tasting Notes
If you liked de Ranke’s XX-Bitter, then this full-bodied bitter beer may just be for you. Despite its higher bitterness level (70 IBU), the extra amount of aroma-hops makes this beer taste smoother than XX. Aromatic notes of white pepper, lemon peel, honey, and floral herbs run all through this beer and the palate is lively carbonated, bone dry, and so pleasantly bitter that some may call it, SNAPPY!
Method
XXX-Bitter is a variation on the existing XX-bitter, where an additional 50% more whole cone Brewers Gold, and Hallertau Mittelfrüh hops were added.
An often challenging style of beer to categorize, sometimes called a Belgian Blonde Ale, or a Belgian Pale Ale, but XXX-Bitter doesn’t have as much Belgian yeasty character, it’s a more hop-driven style of beer. But it also has some similar qualities to Belgian Saisons and Grisettes in that the carbonation is high, it is quite bitter, and has a very dry finish. If have ever had the famous Taras Boulba from Brasserie de la Senne, you may just like XXX-Bitter even more.
