Broadside Margarita Vineyard Merlot (750ml)
Since 2006, Broadside has been crafting wines that showcase the unique soils and topography of Paso Robles. Founders’ Stephanie & Brian Terrizzi approach each wine as a blank canvas where they can capture the vine’s personality, the terroir of the vineyard and the influence of mother nature. Award-winning winemaker Adam LaZarre heads up the production team. With over twenty years of winemaking experience in Paso Robles, Adam works with passionate vineyard owners and winegrowers who are committed to sustainable farming. This shows in the quality of fruit vintage and vintage, resulting in balanced, elegant wines focused on pure fruit expression.
The nose is complex with aromas of cocoa powder, cedar, tobacco, ripe boysenberry, and freshly cut herbs. Cherry cola, rhubarb pie filling, with a little black pepper on the palate. The tannins are soft and supple. Serious acidity keeps the flavors elevated for what seems like forever.
Broadside Margarita Vineyard Merlot is sourced from sustainably farmed vineyards in San Luis Obispo County (Margarita Vineyard within the Santa Margarita Ranch AVA). The vines are 20 years old and farmed on granitic shale on what was once seabed. The farm was established as part of the old Mission Trail across California and is the among oldest cattle ranches operating in the state. The grapes are sustainably farmed, SIP certified. The wine is fermented with native yeasts, seeing only neutral French oak. It rests about 15 months in 14% New French barrels and the balance in neutral French barrels. Bottled without additives or corrective chemicals, only a small degree of sulfites for stability. Bottled unfiltered and unfined, it shows as a distinctly rustic version of Merlot.
While being labeled simply as Merlot the wine is actually as blend of 78% Merlot and 22% Cabernet Sauvignon (in California only 75% by volume of a grape is required to label it as such).
