After having studied law in Paris, the pull to return home to his native land and vineyards was too strong to ignore. Nicolas Mariotti Bindi settled in Oletta, Corsica to live the life of a vigneron and winemaker. He celebrated his first vintage in 2007. He manages this 7 hectare estate using organic grape growing and winemaking principles. Vinification is all natural and only limited amounts of SO2 are used with amounts stated on the label.
Tasting Notes
This is a fruit-packed, unoaked Niellucciu. It exudes primary fruit aroams and flavours; lots of ripe red cherry, savoury and herbal elements. The grape’s innate acidity is counterbalanced by its juicy fruit and the grape’s naturally high tannins are well in check, wonderfully ripe and smooth here as a result of ripening under the Corsican sun.
Method
From Bindi’s home estate in Patrimonio, this is organically farmed Nielluccio (aka Sangiovese) rooted on clay and limestone slopes. Destemmed grapes spent 48 hours in concrete before a native ferment, followed by 24 months’ rest in concrete. It was bottled without fining and with a light filtration. Super floral, with violets, iris, peonies, fragrant plum blossoms scenting a wild blueberry, mulberry base. Tannins are long and sticky on this lighter (12.2%) red, carrying it to a sweetly spiced, lightly saline finish. Quite unique, and unlike any sangiovese you’ve had previously. Worth seeking out.
