José Alberto Calvo Casajús was born in Quintana del Pidio. His enthusiasm and passion for everything that surrounds the world of wine encouraged him to found Bodegas J. A. Calvo Casajús in 1993; a modern company, equipped with the most advanced techniques, but with a deep-rooted family spirit and that preserves the most genuine of the Ribera del Duero wines. It is literally a one-man operation with Casajus also doubling as his village’s baker.

Tasting Notes

Deep garnet red colour.  The nose hints at richness from ripe grapes; dark fruit, spice, floral, mineral notes with toasted wood aromas and sweet tobacco.  Wonderful synergy between fruit and oak. The palate is fullness with smooth silky ripe tannins.  The aromas carry onto the palate revealing red and dark fruit, spice, toast and a mineral quality.  Drinking well now, but can develop further in the bottle.

Method

Tempranillo grapes from vineyards planted in and around 1920 in Quintana del Pidio, a quaint village in the heart of Ribera del Duero.  Since the grapes are harvested by hand, it is possible to do a grape selection right in the vineyard and then collect the grapes in small stainless steel trays. Once in the winery and after the destemming process the grapes fermented in small stainless steel tanks to assure proper control of temperatures and progress of the fermentation. The wine aged for 14 months in French and American oak barrels knitting perfectly the light toast from the barrels with the bright fruit from the Tempranillo varietal. Then the time in bottle will bring refinement and harmony to the wine for years to come.
