Alberto Antonini a consultant for the Chakana Vineyards first came to Argentina in 1995, after key contributions to the Super-Tuscan movement in Italy. His philosophy is focused on using modern technology to express the terroir potential in making high end wines, while respecting the true nature of the grape flavours.   The winemaking philosophy is one of minimal intervention that allows the purest expression of the place.  Chakana operates with great respect for their local communityand endorses the fair trade standards of the international organization Fair For Life.

Tasting Notes

This Malbec was born in a hot, dry year, giving it a pronounced structure that maintains the highly unique characteristics of the Altamira area. You can sense the mountain landscape from the wine’s aromas and flavor profile; geraniums and herbs with lots of depth and concentration, but also a fresh and lifted quality.  The flavors linger pleasantly long after the last sip.

Chakana 20 Vueltas al Sol is 100% Malbec from a very specific plot of Finca Los Cedros de Paraje Altamira, in Valle de Uco. On this plot there is a pronounced patch of calcareous and stony soil that differs from the rest. It’s a special vineyard whose subtlety has always stood out.  The grapes grow at an altitude of 1100 m asl on sandy, chalky, limestone soil.  The juice is wild yeast fermented with minimal sulfites added.  The wine rests in 500 liter German oak barrels, third and fourth fill for 18 months.  Just 150 bottles made!

Our Thoughts

Wow, what a special Malbec this is! A unique bottling of a single vineyard in the Uco Valley, this wine is grown at a very high altitude to lock in the freshness and brightness. Of course, being Argentine Malbec, it is still rich, powerful, full and intense on the palate. Expect savory, inky, oaky notes backed up by stewy dark fruits, a hint of oak, and firm tannins. This has potential for long-term aging and is something of a collector’s item as there were only 150 bottles (!!) made.
