Chateau Calon Segur is the most northerly and one of the oldest estates of the Médoc Grand-Crus Classés.  This 3rd growth classified estate is located in St-Estèphe and is immediately recognisable as the château with a heart on its label.  Its former owner, the Marquis de Ségur, once owned the renowned estates of  Lafite and Latour, but is said to have declared that “My heart belongs to Calon”. For the last century it has been owned by the Gasqueton family.

Calon-Ségur’s 74-hectare vineyard is located just to the north of the village of St-Estèphe and is partly enclosed by a wall.  The vineyard is planted to close to 70% Cabernet Sauvignon with the remainder planted to Merlot and Cabernet Franc.  The vines grow in deep gravelly soil, up to 5 meters deep, mixed with sand and, in parts, limestone and clay.

Tasting Notes

It is ruby red in color with a garnet edge and has tremendous aromatic complexity, and intensity of flavor with black fruits, red plums, cedar, leather, cassis and earthy notes. On the palate the wine is meaty and concentrated with a dense tannic structure, which has now had time to develop and soften. The esters and aldehyde really explode in your mouth, which is no surprise as the 2000 vintage will go down as one of the greatest. Enjoy this with prime cuts of meat, a top quality steak or a selection of firm aged cheeses.

Method

60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Franc.  The vineyard has 74 acres in total and it is surrounded partially by a stonewall and located in the northern town of St. Estephe.  The wines are fermented for 3 weeks in enamel-lined steel vats and are then matured in oak barriques (40% new) for 18 months.
