Chateau Jean Faux is located near Cotes de Castillon in the village of Sainte Radegonde. The property dates back to the 18th century. Château Jean Faux was purchased by Pascal Callotte in 2002.  He previously worked for Tonnellerie Saury, a producer of wine barrels and casks. His consultant winemaker is Stéphane Derenoncourt, who has worked for prestigious Bordeaux estates such as Domaine de Chevalier, Clos Fourtet, Clos de l’Oratoire, Smith Haut Lafitte, and in California for Francis Ford Coppola’s Rubicon Estate Winery. After buying Château Jean Faux, they immediately set out to fully renovate the winery and its vineyards.  The property has been organic since 2011 and as of 2015 is certified biodynamic.  The 12 hectares of vineyards of Chateau Jean Faux are planted to 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc for the red wine. The vines are on average 25 years of age. 2 hectares of vines are reserved for white Bordeaux wine grapes, which are planted to 80% Sauvignon Blanc and 20% Semillon. The terroir of Chateau Jean Faux is clay and limestone soils.

Tasting Notes

Dark cherry, smoke, licorice, savory herbs and rose petals on the nose.  Medium bodied on the palate with fine grained tannins, it has tightly framed notes of red currants, menthol, pencil shavings, and capsicum. It is a sumptuous and racy Bordeaux Supérieur with a creamy, textured finish.  Deeply satisfying and drinking well now, though has the structure to develop nicely in the bottle.

Method

Made from a blend of biodynamic farmed 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc. Vinified in temperature controlled stainless steel and concrete vats that range in size from 40 hectoliters to 80 hectoliters. The grapes are whole berry fermented. Malolactic fermentation takes place in barrel. The wine is then aged in 40% new and 60% two year old French oak barrels for 12 to 14 months.
