Located in the south of the Mâconnais, Fuissé’s Saint-Philibert estate belonged to a family of winegrowers for seven generations before Olivier Giroux bought it in 2002; he gave it the name Clos des Rocs, and converted the entire 10 ha estate to organic farming (they’ve opted to no pursue certification). Consisting of almost a single plot on an east facing hill, extending over vineyards in the Pouilly-Loché and Pouilly-Fuissé appellations, with vines averaging 60 years in age, Giroux owns approximately 30% of Pouilly Loché’s vineyards as the appellation is only 32 ha in size.

Tasting Notes

On the nose, expect citrus notes and floral notes with a touch of lees. The palate is both fresh and clean, with fruit concentration reminiscent of the nose. With an added touch of earth and some firm minerality, pair this with richer dishes like lobster and/or scallops, or take it up another notch and enjoy with a creamy, seafood pasta.

Method

Made from 100% Chardonnay, the grapes are sourced from a small 0.5ha parcel of 25 year old vines, with a southeast exposition and clay-limestone soil. Grapes are manually harvested before a long pressing, followed by alcoholic fermentation using only indigenous yeasts, followed by ageing. Fermentation and elevage are split between roughly 75% steel cuve and 25% neutral oak.

Our Thoughts

Light straw yellow in the glass, displaying primary aromas of tropical fruit like pineapple, mango, and papaya with minimal oak displayed on the nose. The palate is lush and creamy with ripe acidity and minerality, a very balanced ‘fresh’ style of Burgundy; the finish is long and lingering, with medium-high alcohol. A lovely wine for those who enjoy a lightly-oaked Chardonnay that maintains its fruit- it would likely do well in a cellar and gain some depth over a few years of being laid down. Pair with lobster risotto, halibut, or cream sauce pasta- delicious!
