Founded by the concept of creating amazing spirits from locally-sourced ingredients, Compass began production in July 2017 in the heart of Halifax, Nova Scotia with only the highest of standards and quality in mind. Shortly after, their beautiful cocktail bar & tasting room followed, opening that October.
Compass crafts artisan spirits from scratch, with the best locally sourced ingredients, by people who have a passion for the process and the result. Local grain and unique wild plants are used as well as raw ingredients like sugar and molasses and even locally sourced botanicals, like juniper, cucumber, butterfly pea flower and ginger.
Tasting Notes
This ready to drink cocktail is delightfully complex. Bold citrus, deep dark fruit, herbal with come licorice root notes and even a hint of lightly roasted coffee on the nose and palate. Perfect balance of sweet and bitter. To enjoy, just pour over 1 large ice cube and garnish with an orange peel twist. That’s it!
Method
This is Compass Distillers first ready to drink cocktail. The team at distillery spent quite a bit of time examining the variety of ready-to-drink spirit offerings out there, and very few seemed to really capture the type of rich flavours you’d find in a finely crafted cocktail at a bar or at home. Inspired by their combined passions for creating authentic artisanal spirits and cocktails, the distilling team and head bartender worked together to create something unique, convenient and delicious.
The Barrel Aged Negroni is a blend of Compass Gin Royal, their in-house Apertivo recipe and sweet vermouth, aged in an ex-rye whisky barrel for 2 months. Packaged in an attractive and convenient single serve 100ml glass bottle.
Our Thoughts
It was love at first taste for me and this Ready-to-Drink cocktail! Compass Distillers have absolutely nailed the elusive bittersweet balance of a perfect Negroni while still managing to make it their own. Aromatically, the Barrel Aged Negroni is expressive and seductive – I’d wear this as a cologne if I could. Its flavours are reminiscent of Vanilla Cola and Root Beer, black coffee, intense orange citrus notes, and warm wood tones. Simply put, this is *Olivia Cooke voice:* Stunning.
