Delinquente Screaming Betty Vermentino (750ml)
New South Wales
Delinquente is a small batch, single vineyard hand made Australian wine company. They work with organically grown, Southern Italian grape varieties from the Riverland, fermented with wild yeast and minimal intervention.
The Riverland can be very hot and very dry, especially in the during the grape growing season. For that reason, the team at Delinquente has chosen to work with Southern Italian grape varieties – varieties that are suited to the climate, need less water and are naturally drought resistant, are late ripening and retain natural acidity. This means that they can focus on more environmentally sustainable vineyard practices and produce wines with lower alcohol levels and lots of freshness and flavour.
Orange peel, citrus on the nose. The palate kicks off in that same direction, before returning to that stone fruit, white peach and nashi pear profile we love. The acid line cleans up the back end, highlighting the classic Vermentino hit of sea spray, the lovely briny savouriness giving a beautiful long finish to the wine. Perfect, thirst quenching summer white.
2019 was an intense, compact vintage in South Australia, characterised by a dry spring and extremely hot temperatures during early summer. Despite the harsh vintage, the organically farmed Southern Italian varieties withstood the conditions well, developing beautiful flavour and allowed for early picking to maintain acidity, freshness and low ABV. Wild fermented in stainless steel, the wine also spent 6 weeks on fine lees, giving it a beautiful, textural edge not often found in Australian Vermentino’s. This year, with the hotter conditions and
earlier pick date, it is a more textural, crunchier style, whilst still exhibiting the aromatic, lush characteristics.
