The iconic Domaine Tempier has been an active family run farm since 1834 and was given to “Lulu” Tempier and Lucien Peyraud in 1936 as a gift from Lucien’s father. Thanks to Lucien’s dedication in helping revive the Mourvedre grape, Bandol is often cited as being a “grand cru of Provence”.  The terroir of Domaine Tempier is varied and complex.  The land is made up of a patchwork of geologically diverse plots spreading on over a 60 hectare area.  Domaine Tempier has always been respectful and faithful to mother nature. The entire farming process is aligned to the rhythm of the seasons and the lunar calendar; they are an organic and biodynamic wine estate.

Tasting Notes

Aromas of dark fruit and spice abound and the palate boasts ample fruit and dusty tannins. With 5 or more years in the bottle the wine will develop layers of complex aromas and flavours of leather, earth and red fruits.  Enjoy with roast meats, lamb, game and aged sheep cheese.

Method

The Cuvee Classique Bandol is a blend of Mourvedre (70-75%) with lesser amounts of Grenache, Cinsault and Carignan. The grapes are harvested from various vineyards on the Domaine, mainly clay and limestone soil. No chemicals are used in the vineyard and the grapes are hand harvested in small 30kg baskets before, hand sorting and fermenting in stainless steel or concrete vats. The wine is then put in large oak casks (25-75 hl) to complete malolactic fermentation and aged for 18-20 months before bottling. This is a red that has incredible ageing potential.

Our Thoughts

There’s a reason why the wines of Domaine Tempier are so sought after, and this wine is no exception. The 2020 vintage of this Bandol Rouge is the first to bear the name “Lulu & Lucien,” after the passing of Lucie “Lulu” Peyraud right after harvest of that year at the age of 103. It encapsulates the divisive but enticing aromas that Bandol is so famous for; barnyard funk, horse blanket, and intensely deep, dark fruit. This wine is extremely powerful and has the bones to age for many years, though it is showing wonderfully right now as well.

I had the chance of tasting a Tempier Bandol Rouge 2010, classic ( a blend of multiple parcels) do in September 2022. The pairing was with roasted quails. It has been a stunning good surprise. My advice: if one has a decent cellar, do not hesitate to age these wines, you will be rewarded by your patience.
