One of Nova Scotia’s first craft brewery’s, celebrating their 25th anniversary in 2022 – Garrison Brewing Company located on the Halifax waterfront, follows the rich brewing tradition in Nova Scotia by producing a wide array of flavourful beers for the local market, and nationally. Garrison brews a variety of full flavored, all natural, preservative free ales. Each glass represents a tribute to the art of hand-crafting ales with the finest natural ingredients.
Tasting Notes
Garrison’s brewmaster, Daniel, spent his early years learning to brew in Germany at the brewing university – so when he makes a proper German style (one of our favourites) you drink it. Doug’s Brau is a German Marzen, one of the countries oldest continuously brewed styles. It pours copper in colour, with rich aromas of caramel and brown bread. The palate is very malty, but smooth and finishes dry and refreshing thanks to the classic German hops that are used. This is a perfect beer style to pair with foods that are roasted, baked, braised, or stewed.
Method
German Marzen is a very old style that ranges from copper to reddish brown in colour. The beer is characterized by malty aroma and slight malt sweetness. Vienna malt, a unique malt from the Germanic brewing world, is used in this style, providing rich aromas of caramelized bready notes. These beers are very malt-forward, but always clean, crisp, and smooth.
