A family story that began in 1920, when Henri Farge bought 12 hectares of vines from a Norman general.  He cultivated grapes and sold them to the local cooperative cellar, as did his son and his grandson André Farge.  Guy Farge was to follow and e took over the management of his family estate in 1980. Originally he sold his fruit to the Cave de Tain (where he worked).  In 2007, he began producing wines under his own label. Each year, the wines have grown and evolved as has Guy’s winemaking prowess.   In 2018, after having worked for years alongside his father, Guy’s eldest son Thomas took over the domaine.  Thomas keeps the style of the house, and always seeks wines with freshness and terroir. “Summers are getting hotter and hotter, it’s up to us winegrowers to keep the typicality of our terroir,” emphasizes Thomas. Thomas and each bottling represents some of the best this granitic soil.

Tasting Notes

Terroir de Granit perfectly bears the identity, the character of Saint Joseph; red and black fruit, spice, balsamic notes, herbs and cocoa on the nose and palate.  Beautifully structured with sikly tannins, ripe fruit and a long finish.  The great wine choice to accompany your grilled meats, lamb tajines, beef with Béarnaise sauce.

Method

Most of the 20 hectars of the estate are cultivated in terraces on very steep slopes. The vines are trained using environmentally friendly farming methods without herbicides and with the use of horses to plough and aerate the soils. The estate owns very old wines in Saint Joseph with some vines older then hundred years.  After a hand harvest at optimum maturity, everything is done in the cellar to respect the grapes : use of gravity to move the grapes and must during the winemaking process, minimal mechanical extraction and use of soft pneumatic pumps. Most of the wines are vinified without destemming.  The different steps of cellar activities are done following the Lunar calendar.

This wine is made from 100% Syrah grown on granite soils in the appellation of Saint Joseph.  Whole cluster fermentation is stems for one month with daily pumping over and racking.   The wine ages in 400 liter barrels of 5 wines and a 3000 liter vat over 12 months completed with 2 months in vats.
