The origins of Hacienda El Ternero date back to 1077, a time when it belonged to the Santa MarĂa de Herrera Monastery. In the heart of the hacienda, buildings from the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries now house the winery, whilst in the past they were used as the monastery, barracks, school and a hospice for pilgrims on the Camino de Santiago. In the centre, the Hacienda El Ternero hermitage watches over the Virgin of the Pear, the patron saint of the estate. This unique enclave at the foot of the Obarenes Mountains covers 250 hectares in the heart of the Rioja Alta. With almost one thousand years of history, time seems to have stopped at Hacienda El Ternero.
Tasting Notes
Bright cherry red color with a violet hue. Pronounced aroma of ripe black fruit, sweet oak, toast with touched of caramel and balsamic notes. Medium weight, bright acidity and soft tannins. The palate is fruit forward with pleasing notes of wood and spice and the finish is dry with a lingering licorice note.
Method
This wine is mainly Tempranillo (95%) with a touch of Mazuelo from their 120 hectares of vineyards that surround the winery. The grapes are hand harvested from the oldest plots on the farm. After alcoholic fermentation and pressing, the wine goes directly into barrel, where it undergoes malolactic fermentation on its own lees. It remains for a minimum of 24 months in new French oak barrels. Bottled without any type of clarification or stabilization, so it may present some precipitate.
Our Thoughts
Originally a monastery, structures built at what is now Hacienda El Ternero date back to 1077 AD. Plenty of history is backed up with plenty of winemaking knowhow as well. This classic Rioja – full flavoured, dark and fruity supported by a backbone of rich American oak. 10 years of age has worked wonders on this wine and it is just entering its peak drinking window. Expect notes of dried red fruits, fruitcake, milk chocolate and cedar. A wine of this calibre would make a perfect gift for the wine aficionado in your life!
