Jean Stodden Spatburgunder JS (750ml)
Jean Stodden, run by Alexander Stodden, is one of the Ahr’s top producers. The winery has been here since 1900 and Alexander is the fifth generation of the family to work in the business. His grandfather became known for good wines in this red wine focused region. Stodden established a reputation for high quality dry wines at a time when most were sweet. Alexander started in the cellar in 2001 and has been in charge since 2006; he has 7 hectares of vines in 65 separate plots, and production is 95% red of which 88% is dedicated to Pinot Noir. In 2016 one of Jean Stodden’s Pinot Noirs came first in Decanter’s global Pinot Noir competition; where a selection of world class Pinot Noir, outside of Burgundy, were evaluated and scored in blind tastings.
His vines grow on steep slate granite soils, the yields are low at 44 hectoliters per hectare and the winemaking is fairly traditional with longer maceration times (4 to 21 days), then fermentation on skins until the right amount of body has been achieved. The wine and lees is then transferred to French barriques for a minimum of 16 months after the harvest to develop fully. These are wines with lots of ageing potential.
The 2015 Spätburgunder JS is sourced from top parcels in unclassified vineyards but planted with Dijon clones and kept at 45 hectoliters per hectare. Fermented in stainless steel and aged in 10% new and 90% used oak, it opens with a gorgeously pure, fresh and aromatic bouquet of ripe red fruits, cherries and floral aromas. Smooth and very delicate on the palate, this is an intense, tight, fresh, well-concentrated and minerally/salty Pinot Noir of remarkable purity, finesse and elegance. The finish is intensely aromatic and persistent, and the tannins are ripe and very fine. This is a delicious Pinot Noir at a very attractive price point. 90 pts – Robert Parker Wine Advocate
