After searching extensively across several regions of Argentina, François Lurton planted his vineyard at high altitude in the Uco Valley, in the foothills of the Andes Cordillera, in semi-desert conditions (the poor, gravelly soil is reminiscent of Pessac-Léognan!). This unexplored region is known as Chacayes, the name that François later gave to the property’s finest wine. A pioneer of the Uco Valley, he built his winery, Bodega Piedra Negra, in the heart of 200 hectares of virgin land. Drawing on expertise acquired all over the world, he immediately introduced environmentally-friendly winegrowing methods.
Tasting Notes
Pronounced aromas of ripe pear, baked apple, lemon curd and white flowers. The palate is dry with ripe pear, quince and green tea-like flavours. This medium weight wine has a pleasingly soft texture making it smooth and easy to drink on its own. Would taste delicious alongside reach seafood dishes, mild curries and soft creamy cheeses.
Method
Made from Pinot Gris (aka Pinot Grigio grapes). The Lurton family were the first to plant Pinot Gris in Argentina. Their estate is situated at the foothills of the Andes, at an altitude of 1100 m, on gravelly well draining and infertile soil mixed with volcanic moraines. The climate is semi desert characterised by lots of sunshine hours and minimal rainfall. The high diurnal temperature shifts make for wines with lots of ripe fruit and fresh acidity. The grapes are machine harvested and feremented at low temperatures with selected yeasts. The wine ages on the fine lees for three months in stainless steel tanks undergoing weekly pump overs to give more body and palate texture to the final wine.
