The La Gerla estate is located at 320 metres above sea level, on the gentle slopes below Montalcino. This small wine estate has established itself as one of the great crùs in this territory in the heart of Tuscany. Sergio Rossi, a successful businessman purchased the property in 1976 and completely restructured the estate while respecting its original environment.  The estate originally belonged to the famous Biondi Santi family, the Biondi Santi family accredited for making Brunello what it is today.  La Gerla was officially created in 1978 and today there are 11.5 hectares under vine along with a team of experts who assist in crafting fine wine. This small wine estate has established itself as one of the great crùs in this territory in the heart of Tuscany.

Sergio Rossi passed away in July 2011.  His legacy continues through his team who embody his great attention to  quality and detail in the craft of growing grapes and making wine.

Tasting Notes

This is classic Brunello; focused and flavorful, with hints of violets and berries on the nose, a full, dry and spicy palate with a rich, slightly velvety texture and excellent acidity and persistence on the finish.  Fruit richness, tannic power, finesse and freshness.   This Brunello is radiant, full of nervous tension, absolutely delicious. Decant it if you want to enjoy it now, but this wine has the structure to develop beautifully for many years to come.

Method

A blend of both the Canalicchio and Castelnuovo vineyards. The grapes are kept cool for 7-8 days before fermentation, which lasts up to 15 days. The wine is then transferred to large 50-100hl casks and is aged for three years, racked twice a year, then bottled.   The wine is ready to be released to market 5 years after the vintage as per the appellation standards.

2016 was an excellent vintage for Brunello thanks to optimal weather patterns.   The wines from this vintage combine fruit richness, tannic power, finesse and freshness.  La Gerla is at its best here, this Brunello is radiant, full of nervous tension and overall a delicious wine. Decant it if you want to enjoy it now, but this wine has the structure to develop beautifully for many years to come.
