In 1886 a young couple decided to plant a small vineyard in the foothills of Mount Yerga, Baja Rioja. Little did they know the importance this decision would have for the following generations. Seven generations later, that simple vineyard has grown to 100 hectares and is Bodegas d. Mateos. The winery has a variety of grapes planted on the estate of various ages and an extensive barrel cellar of predominantly French and some American oak for their ageing program. They produce a a few ranges of wines, from varietal focused and easy drinking to classic terroir expressive styles.
Tasting Notes
Brilliant ruby-red colour. Intense, elegant and complex bouquet, with ripe black and red fruit aromas, but maintaining the original freshness of the variety. Perfectly assembled and integrated oak with sweet spices (cocoa and blond tobacco), enveloped in a diary sensation. The palate is fleshy with concentrated fruits and a very well
balanced acidity. And creamy and sweet oak notes over a mineral background on the finish.
Method
The Garnacha grapes are harvested from 75 year old vines, are de-stemming and cold macerated for 4 days then fermented in stainless steel with daily punch downs. Malolactic fermention occurs naturally for 42 days in new 225 l barrels and then the wines continues to age for another 15 months in barrels. The sediment settles in the barrels and clarification happens naturally with quarterly racking. The wine is bottled without filtering.
