Tasting Notes
Friends of Lazy Bear sent the brewery some dried Norwegian Kveik yeast a few summers ago, the brewers were able to propagate the yeast and brew a beer with it! This yeast is the starting point for a traditional Norwegian farmhouse ale; the next essential ingredient is juniper sprigs which they recovered much closer to home.
Expect an amber base beer with yeast-driven notes of fruity berries, crack black pepper, and florals that perfectly mingle with light caramel tones of the base beer. The finish has snappy bitterness and clean, well carbonated mouthfeel.
Method
Beers in this category are gold to light amber in colour. Often bottle-conditioned, with some yeast character and high carbonation. Belgian-style saison may have Brettanomyces or lactic character, and fruity, horsey, goaty and/or leather-like aromas and flavours. Specialty ingredients, including spices, may contribute a unique and signature character. Commonly called “farmhouse ales” and originating as summertime beers in Belgium, these are not just warm-weather treats. U.S. craft brewers brew them year-round and have taken to adding a variety of additional ingredients.
