La Gerla Riserva di Angeli 2012 (750ml)
The La Gerla estate is located at 320 metres above sea level, on the gentle slopes below Montalcino. This small wine estate has established itself as one of the great crùs in this territory in the heart of Tuscany. Sergio Rossi purchased the property in 1976 and now has 11.5 hectares under vine along with a team of experts who assist in crafting fine Brunello.
Rare and Fine 2019.
This is the signature wine of the estate, obtained from the vinification of the best grapes coming from our emblematic vineyard, Vigna gli Angeli (Vineyard of the Angels), which was first planted at Colombaio in 1976. The selection of the grapes is severe and drastic until there is a yield per hectare equal to 65 quintals. The end result is an extremely complex wine, both in aromas where spicy notes and tobacco prevail, as well as in the very unique tannic texture. This wine is only produced for exceptional vintages and is destined for long ageing. Soft pressing of grapes, temperature-controlled fermentation (30°C) macro-oxygenation and maceration (15 days), racking twice a year, slow continuous flow bottling in sterilized conditions. The wine ages for four years in 50-100hl Slavonian oak barrels, followed by one year in bottle before release. The wine is ruby red tending to garnet in colour, the nose is evolving with notes of violet, cherry and forrest berries . The palate is dry, full, harmonious with ripe velvety tannins and a long persistent finish.
Bright medium ruby. Very clean and fresh aromas and flavors of red currant, cherry pit, flowers and blood orange jelly. Bright, juicy and very light on its feet, offering superb vinosity and clarity of flavor, this conveys an impression of real underlying density and a multilayered mouthfeel. A knockout wine of outstanding energy and class, finishing with polished tannins, uncanny sweetness and lovely subtle persistence, not to mention outstanding balance (it hides its 14.5% alcohol very well). 95 pts Vinous Ian D’Agata
