Little James Basket Press Red (750ml)
Saint Cosme – located north to the village of Gigondas – is the most ancient estate in the region. In fact, there is evidence of a Gallo-Roman villa on the site that dates to 1416! The diversity of soils and cool micro-climates encourage slow, even and late ripening of grapes. The dedication at Saint Cosme is total; they want to best express the extraordinary potential of the terroir. Years of experience, old vines and organic viticulture are also key contributing factors to the high quality of Saint Cosme wines and their elegant house style. The Little James Basket Press Red by St. Cosme is the embodiment of the phrase “creative freedom.”
Saint Cosme Little James’ Basket Press Rouge carries the Vin de France designation due to its unique production method. This 100% Grenache is made from blending wines from multiple vintages in concrete tanks (called a solera system) starting with the 1999 vintage. The result is a wine that is both vibrant and complex.
This wine is smooth and incredibly balanced; an easy drinking red wine that appeals to most palates and many occasions. Cherry, spices from the oak, gingerbread, strawberry compote, coal, tar.
Little James is at Saint Cosme the wine of freedom. Our Solera is getting more and more complexity year after year. When we add the current vintage, the solera gains a new element without changing the style. This wine recalls the ancient times when the wine merchants would make wines having only one target: simple pleasure. Blending vintages can be a great way to make nice wines, if it’s well done. This cuvée shows how the grenache can be a ‘chameleon-grape’ which has the ability to take many different forms. But it always keeps its sense of softness, fruit and texture. -Louis Barruol, winemaker
