Longview The Piece Shiraz (750ml)
Longview Estates falls within Adelaide Hill’s cool-climate sites. Most of the rainfall occurs during the winter months, while the summers are warm and dry while the vineyards are cooled by the winds coming off of Lake Alexandrina. These are ideal conditions for the development of flavours, aromatics, depth and structure in the grapes.
Longview’s “Piece Project” offers a full sensory experience of wine, food, art, dance and music. Guests are invited to the vineyard to witness four street artists at work as they each create a piece to be featured on the label of “The Piece Shiraz”.
The grapes for ‘The Piece’ come from five blocks of Shiraz that historically outperform others, hence helping the selection process and create variability for blending options at the winery. These parcels were hand-harvested early morning then immediately stored in cold rooms. Each 1-ton parcel was open-fermented with approximately 15% whole bunches and kept separate right through to blending, after remaining in new and old French oak hogsheads for around 18 months. Approximately half the barrels are then individually chosen on wine quality for the final blend.
An elegant and complex wine which displays aromas of baking spices, maraschino cherry, aniseand coffee coupled with restrained pencil shavings of French oak. The structured palate displays flavours of cherry, red currant, mulberries and fresh acidity. Dusty tannins complement the finish which is dry and clean with tremendous length. Cellar for 15 years or more, with careful decanting when opening.
The Shiraz parcels for ‘The Piece’ 2016 vintage were hand-harvested in late March. Fruit from selected rows and even panels, were chosen from five different blocks on the vineyard to assemble this wine. The selection process is based on vine balance according to yield, berry size, bunch weight, canopy health and most importantly fruit flavour. These five blocks of Shiraz historically outperform others.
