Maison des Bulliats crafts high quality Beaujolais in the prestigious Cru of Regnie. It is a small family run domaine; only 8 hectares of predominantly 50 year old Gamay vines are planted on a combination of granite and sandy soils. The wines are beautifully balanced and reflect the “gout du terroir”. The property is owned and operated by Canadian born and raised Fred Lockwood, his wife Helen and their two sons. After carreers in academia as engineering and arts professors in Lodon, England, the couple longed for a change and moved to Beaujolais.
The wine is made according to traditional Beaujolais winemaking methods where the grapes are hand harvested in small containers to avoid premature crushing. The bunches are manually sorted before undergoing a first fermentation of whole bunches in order to best bring out the wonderful fruity qualities of the Gamay grape and extract colour without extracting bitter or harsh tannins.
Bishop’s Cellar acquired this wine just before the 2014 holiday season after a fortuitous encounter between Bishop’s Cellar wine guy Tristan Gray and the proprietor of the domaine.
Maison des Bulliats Régnié has a clear deep ruby red colour with hints of violet, and a wonderful nose of fruits of the forest and rubbed bramble leaf. On the palate it is medium bodied, fruity and sappy, with lots of dark crunchy brambly fruit, spice, and a hint of liquorice.
This 100% Gamay is the perfect red to complement your thanksgiving turkey and the changing of seasons. This lighter style of wine is filled with cranberry, cherry and herbaceous notes with pretty floral hints of violet. The same flavours show through on the palate of this delicious fall sipper. Pair with turkey and cranberry sauce, grilled vegetables, or salmon.
