Originally founded in 1820, the Movia winery and estate in Brda (Slovenia) had already become one of Europe’s most famous wineries in the years that followed World War II. Its celebrity was bolstered by the fact that its wines were favorites of Marshal Tito who ruled over Slovenia and its neighbor Croatia as part of the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia until 1980.
Located in the village of Ceglo in the heart of the Brda appellation, literally a stone’s throw from the Italian border, Movia is widely put the Slovenia on the map of the world’s great wine regions in the late 1990s when the interest in wines grown in former Eastern Bloc states began to flourish.
The current generation of Movia is led by winemaker Aleš Kristančič who is as renowned for his passionate embrace of organic and biodynamic farming practices as he is for his larger-than-life personality and ingenious approach to winemaking.
Tasting Notes
From the winery: “A Pinot Gris with golden yellow color and a slight coppery rim, crystal clear and dense. Its intense bouquet is reminiscent of orange peel, peach compote, yellow plum and mango. Gentle notes of vanilla, butter, sweet root, as well as oregano, nutmeg and yellow rose join its aromatic landscape. The wine is dry, soft, at the same time fresh and minerally tasty, just enough to act balanced. With a slightly spicy finish. An intense wine of pronounced elegance, full-bodied and lingering with flavors of quince, orange.“
Method
100% Pinot Gris grown on Brda flysh soil (Brda marlstone). After early morning harvest, the grapes are destemmed and sorted. Followed by a 6 hour maceration, it is pressed and the wine is put in barrels (30%) and in stainless steel tanks (70%), where it ages for 6 months on the lees. Organic.
