Stefano Sincini established Pianirossi over thirty years ago in the southern Tuscan Maremma region.  Today it is a 40 acre estate producing sought after wines and a charming old farmhouse converted to a boutique hotel. The wines are produced under the lead of Carlo Ferrini, one of the most important oenologists working in Italy today.  He consults with many Italian as well as international wineries.  Ferrini says “An important wine can only happen in the vineyard.  My biggest challenge is to find new soils to plant the vineyards.”  With Pianirossi, he identified an incredible potential and he selected the most appropriate varieties for that site.   Pianirossi has a small and intentional wine portfolio so they can focus on producing quality wines that truly reflect their sense of place.

Tasting Notes

Deep purple red colour.  A pronounced bouquet of wild berries, cherry and Mediterranean herbs.  The palate is full and round with soft tannins supporting the ripe fruit and harmonious acidity providing lightness and brightness to the whole and making this a wonderfully food friendly wine.  Enjoy this with porchetta, pizza, tomato based pastas or medium to mature cheeses.

Method

The Maremma area was once a marshland; a swampy area that was drained and reclaimed for agricultural purposes in the first half of the 20th century.  Pianirossi is located in the southern Maremma and slightly inland, within the Montecucco DOC, at the foothill of Monte Amiata.  The Orcia river separates this area from Montalcino to the north.  The climate is Mediterranean, though moderated by higher elevation and wind currants which provide optimal diurnal variation ensuring the grapes ripen well while retaining their acidity.

Solus is one of Pianirossi’s Supertuscan blends of 45% Sangiovese, 45% Montepulciano and 10% Alicante. The wine ages 12 months in French barriques.
