Raymond Usseglio Chateauneuf du Pape Imperiale (750ml)
Stéphane Usseglio, son of Raymond, has taken over the domaine in the last few years. He is pushing to reach the potential of the family’s holdings, which are some of the best of the Châteauneuf region. Half of his vines are situated near the road in the lieu-dit “La Crau” and the other half are found on the hill across the road from the actual ruins of the
new castle of the Pope. He has the good fortune to have very old vines- the average age for his Châteauneuf vines is between 50-60 years old, while the Cuvée Imperiale vines are over 110 years old. Usseglio is considered one of the top producers in the appellation and Cuvée Imperiale is the flagship wine. The wines are biodynamic and the grapes were hand harvested, de-stemmed, and fermented in concrete tanks.
Tasting note: Blackberries, blueberries, stone, violets, and graphite emerge from this tight, full-bodied, and concentrated Châteauneuf-du-Pape. Possessing incredible purity of fruit, this is a concentrated, yet fresh and structured profile, with a huge finish. Give it time to shine!
“The 2017 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee Imperiale (from vines planted in 1902) is firm and structured to age magnificently. Roses, black tea and red raspberries all appear on the nose and palate, framed by fine-grained tannins. I suspect it will close down shortly, but there is terrific material here, and the wine will drink well for two decades.”- 96 points, Joe Czerwinski for Wine Advocate
