Domaine Robert Sirugue is a family-run estate based in Vosne-Romanée. In 2000, Robert Sirugue passed the property on to his daughter and son, Marie-France and Jean-Louis, who represent the 4th generation of wine growers. The vineyards occupy almost 12 hectares of sustainably grown vines including their jewel of Grands Echézeaux and also parcels in Les Petits Monts and Les Mombies in Chambolle-Musigny. Most of the bottles disappear into top restaurants around the world which is why the wines are still relatively unknown despite their undisputed quality. We tasted the 2019s with Marie-France. As with most growers, there was a significant reduction in yield, but the results are exceptional. The wines are intense, elegant and vivacious and will age brilliantly.
Tasting Notes
From three ‘climats’ in Vosne-Romanée, FlageyÉchezeaux and Gilly-lès-Cîteaux, this very appealing Bourgogne Rouge has an expressive nose with juicy wild berry fruit flavours, lots of cherry, and a hint of spice (Asian five spice) and balanced by fine silky tannins. Almost Vosne Romanee style terroir at the Bourgogne level. Perfect for drinking over the next few years. Pair this with duck, roast pork or Turkey dinner.
Method
The grapes are harvested manually and sorted both in the vineyard and the cellar before a cool maceration takes place to extract the red fruit flavours, without resorting to extended pigeage (punching down). Typically, the family age their wines for 18 months in wood, but the emphasis for their range is very much on the fruit, from the Bourgogne Pinot Noir right up to the Grand Cru Echézeaux.
