Paolo Scavino is an historical winery in the Barolo region. It was founded in 1921 in Castiglione Falletto by Lorenzo Scavino and his son Paolo. Farming has always been a family tradition and passion. Enrico Scavino together with the daughters Enrica and Elisa, fourth generation, run the family estate. He started to work full time in the winery in 1951 when he was 10 years old. A young winemaker who inherited the passion and devotion for the land he belongs to. Through over 60 years of experience his focus has been to invest on important cru of Nebbiolo to show the uniqueness of each terroir.
Tasting Notes
The 2015 vintage made for a dense and primary fruit driven Barolo when it was first released. With some time in the bottle, the wine is revealing more nuanced charm and complexity. It is very fragrant with pronounced floral, red fruit, spice, cinnamon, cedar, woodsy notes and a hint of musk. Ripe fine grained tannins and a lingering finish. The wine is starting to drink well now and will continue to develop and please for many years to come.
Method
Cannubi is probably the most historical vineyard of the all Barolo region, in Barolo village. Scavino has been producing a wine from the Cannubi cru since 1985. This is one of their two oldest vineyards, it sits at an elevation of 290 meters above sea level on a south-south east slope and was planted in 1946 on the central crest of Cannubi hill. The yields are low; due to a special combination of natural factors, one being the old age of the vines.
The 2015 vintage was challenging due to the above average summer temperatures, but with good vineyard management throughout the summer, the resulting wine is balanced, not too hot, with good acidity and colour stability.
