Giuseppe Maria “Giugi” Sesti did not initially choose a career in wine. His Venetian upbringing inspired him to study music, art, and astronomy- the last of which became his profession. He met his future wife in North Wales while writing his first book on Astronomy and in 1975 Giugi and Sarah moved their family to Tuscany. There they bought the abandoned ruins of the hamlet and castle of Argiano- slowly bringing the estate back to its former splendour. Giugi’s roles as a father of four, the vice-director of a local Baroque opera festival, and astronomer did not keep him from pursuing his passion for viticulture and oenology. He always found the time to help his friends in their vineyards, wineries and cellars and in 1991 he eventually planted his own vineyards on the slopes around the castle. In 1999 the couple’s only daughter, Elisa, joined the estate full time, and today she is an active partner in all aspects of the vineyard management and winemaking.

Sesti Brunello is crafted with a minimalist approach in the vineyards and cellars. Less intervention and observing the effects of the moon on growth are important factors in their vineyard management. The wine spends 39 months in oak botti before being bottled, unfiltered and unfined. The wine rests one year in bottle before release.

Tasting Notes

Aromas recalling underbrush, truffle, leather, toast, red berry and a whiff of blue flower emerge on this bold Brunello. The full-bodied palate shows wild cherry, cinnamon, anise and dried herb alongside youthfully assertive tannins. It’s still tight so give it several more years to unwind and develop complexity. Drink 2020–2026.
