Small Pony Barrel Works was established in 2017. They are Canada’s first (and probably only) all barrel-aged sour beer brewery. The beers are aged in ex-Napa Valley wine barrels for between 9 months and over 2 years. Small Pony has developed a reputation for making an array of both complex, and refreshing sour beers that are great to drink fresh, but also to properly cellar.
Tasting Notes
You might not have tried a beer like this before. This limited release barrel aged smoothie sour is bursting with tropical flavours, has a fruit smoothie texture, and is sweet and sour. 3 different fruit purees are added to balance out the considerable acidity that Small Pony is known for. The result is a creamy, smoothie-like sour beer that straddles the line of complex sour fruit beer, and being completely ridiculous. You decide!

Method
A Golden Sour Beer Aged in Oak Barrels Packaged with Pureed Mango, Pineapple and Passionfruit.
Smoothie beers are best kept cold and drank fresh, since the fresh fruit purees contain fermentable sugars that can and do lead to exploding cans. The brewery has gone the extra responsible step of pasteurizing this beer, so that lapses in judgement shouldn’t lead to costly dry-cleaning bills or deep cleans of your car or carpets.
