Passionate winemaker and founder of Staete Landt Wines, Ruud Maasdam, emigrated to New Zealand from The Netherlands in 1996, believing New Zealand to be the best place in the world to grow grapes and make eclectic wines. Since 2000, Staete Landt Wines have produced a range of exclusive and premium wines. When they planted their first vines in Marlborough there was little more there than a few sparse vineyards. 20 years later, this little haven at the top of the South Island of New Zealand has put an iconic New Zealand-style Sauvignon Blanc on the world map.
Tasting Notes
‘Map Maker’ Sauvignon Blanc is a perfect example of a luxuriously classic Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc. Intensely aromatic with attractive herbs and stony notes. A creamy dry, tangy sauvignon blanc with green capsicum, lime zest, gooseberry and subtle tropical fruit and passionfruit flavours. A light, fresh wine with good purity and energy.
Method
‘Map Maker’ Sauvignon Blanc is grown in small individual vineyard parcels in some of the top sub-appellations of the Marlborough Region. Each parcel comes from a unique site which is renowned for either old riverbed clayish soils or riverbank gravels. This land delivers the original vibrant flavours for which Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc is so famous. Each parcel of Sauvignon Blanc is harvested separately, providing an array of different flavours and structure. The grapes were then fermented with an array of yeasts to further enhance the flavours and structure of the grapes. After fermentation the individually fermented ‘parcels’ of grapes were blended together and left to settle in tank before bottling.
