TintoNegro, meaning black wine in Spanish, is meant to celebrate the essence of Malbec in Mendoza. Known for its dark, blackish color Malbec is definitely a TintoNegro. TintoNegro was born of the long time friendship and professional collaboration of Alejandro Sejanovich and Jeff Mausbach, colleagues at Bodega Catena Zapata for almost 15 years,  along with Jorge Crotta.

As Wine Education Director for Catena, Jeff travelled the world preaching the gospel of the unique character of high altitude Malbec from Mendoza.  As Vineyard Director at Catena, Alejandro had extensive, first hand experience growing Malbec in diverse Mendoza terroirs.  His intimate knowledge of the top vineyards in each region means TintoNegro wines are made from only the best fruit each area has to offer.  Jorge Crotta brings his business studies and his industry experience to the team.

TintoNegro wines are meant to reflect the heart and soul of Malbec in Mendoza. The portfolio explores the terroirs of Mendoza where Malbec does best, gradually isolating unique vineyard sites and winemaking techniques which can showcase the heights of concentration and complexity to which Malbec can aspire.

Tasting Notes

The wine reflects the classic characteristics of Mendoza Malbec; inky and concentrated with lots of blueberry and currant on the nose and palate along with light spicy peppery notes, some graphite and distinct freshness.  The wine shows a nice balance of ripe fruit without it being goopy, its medium weight, supple tannins and fresh acidity make it an easy wine to pair with a range of foods, from pizza to grilled meat.

Method

The Primera Zona of the Lujan de Cuyo and Maipu areas are located 10 miles to the south, southwest of the city of Mendoza.  Altitudes range from 2,600’ to  3,300’ elevation. Lujan de Cuyo and Maipu have a deep soil profile with a clay – loam texture. This alluvial valley has some of the heavier soils in Mendoza with higher levels of water retention than most other areas in Mendoza.  This cool soil produces Malbecs with bright red fruit flavors, a soft, supple texture with a spicy finish.

The Malbec vines for this wine were planted in 1955.  The grapes were fermented in concrete eggs and aged for 15 months in French oak, 28% of which is new.

Pretty easy drinking wine. Need to admit I did not get the tasting notes (I thought it was closer to strawberry with a bit of vanilla than Blueberries), so I’m a bit of a wine minor. But paired it with grilled Hamburgers and it was nice.
