Vincenzo Abbruzzese has been directing the Valdicava winery in the north of the Montalcino area along with oenologist Attilio Pagli since 1987.  Martini Bramante, his maternal grandfather, acquired the estate in 1953 and started Brunello production in 1968.  At that time, their wines were made by the Brunello Consortium, thought the family name was highlighted on the labels. In 1977 wines under their own label were only put on the market.  Over the years the vineyards were overhauled and the cellars renovated. The investments paid off and the results are obvious when tasting the wines of Tenuta Valdicava.

The estate’s 19 hectares of vineyards form an almost enclosed area on the slopes of the Montosoli hill at an altitude of 300 metres. They are exclusively planted with Sangiovese Grosso and mass selection was practised during planting.  The grape yields are kept very small. Vincenzo, a true quality fanatic, says he spends every day in his vineyards and works with agronomist Andrea Paoletti.

Valdicava produces critically acclaimed and extremely structured Brunello di Montalcino wines that are made for long cellaring.

Tasting Notes

The nose shows balsamic notes, black tea, dark berry, walnut and light roast coffee. The palate is full, tight and very intense with ripe tannins that are fine and reserved.  Crushed cherries, raspberries and plums are complimented by clove, orange zest and menthol.  Intense fruit, mineral with savory herbs and florals notes that all unfold to a lengthy finish.

Method

Made from Sangiovese Grosso grapes produced according to the Brunello di Montalcino Riserva DOCG standards.  One of the most distinguishing characteristics for Brunello di Montalcino is the long ageing requirements; the longest in Italy.  Brunello di Montalcino must be aged for a minimum of four years with at least two in oak and 4 months in bottle.
