Famous Veuve Clicquot dates as far back as 1772, when Phillippe Clicquot decides to start a wine business with the goal of what he refers to as “crossing borders.” 1805 saw the most monumental shift with widow Madame Clicquot taking over the family business and becoming one of the first modern business woman. Her list of accomplishments are long and include: releasing the first recorded vintage champagne in 1805, inventing the first riddling table in 1816, and creating the first “rosé d’assemblage” in 1818 using red grapes from her Bouzy vineyards. Jump to 1986 when the winery was acquired by Louis Vuitton and the rest is history, really.

In 2002, Maison Sichel bought a property in Saint-André-du-Bois 60 km south of Bordeaux and renamed it Château Argadens in reference to the noble family which founded the estate in the thirteenth century. A major investment programme was launched at Château Argadens to restructure the vineyard, increase plantation density, modernise the winery and build an ageing cellar. Efforts are going on to ensure that this work is carried out with the greatest precision and care, the objective being to allow the quality of the terroir to be expressed to the full.
Château Argadens produces one white and one red wine. Château d’Argadens has earned a place among the best wines in its appellation of Bordeaux Supérieur.

Purchased by Renzo Cesari in 1928, his passion was viticulture. That passion stretched across generations when the winery changed hands; it was passed down to his grandson Stefano, who built a relationship with Roberto Ferrarini- former oenologist and professor of oenology at University of Verona, considered by many as one of the most important innovators in the history of Amarone and Valpolicella.
Stefano, former President of the Valpolicella Region Growers Association, dedicated his time during his presidency to improving Valpolicella through low yields, improved viticultural practices, careful clone selection, and modern winemaking techniques. His focus is on farming traditional grapes of Valpolicella Classico DOC, while emphasizing high-quality Corvina over Rondinella and Molinara, on his 47 ha (120 ha in total, the rest mainly consisting of olive groves, crops, pastures, and woods) of estate vineyards near the village of San Floriano- the heart of the region.

Owned and operated by the four Sichel brothers and one of the brother’s two sons, Maison Sichel dates as far back as 1883 where the family moved from Britain to Bordeaux and set up their office; the original location at 19 Quai de Bacalan is where their current headquarters still sits today. Back then, Sichel was more concerned with procuring wines for places like Mainz, London, and New York, operating as a wine merchant but fast forward a couple of decades and the 20th century sees the family acquiring Châteaus all over France such as Château Angludet, Château Argadens, and now-famous Château Palmer- beginning the journey of wine merchants to winemakers. With expansion to China via the opening of another sales office in 2008, Maison Sichel has certainly made a name for themselves in the winemaking business.

The Boscarelli story began in 1962 with founder Egidio Corradi’s dream of producing a noble wine that exalts the aromas and flavors of his native land while imparting the elegance he loved. After having left his native home in the Montepulciano region of the Siena countryside, he worked most of his life as an international broker in Northern Italy. Yet, his passion for wine and longing for his home region spurred him to purchase two old farms in the Montepulciano area. The land had long been cultivated in the traditional way with different annual crops and small vineyards. Together with his daughter, Paola, and her husband they started the Boscarelli estate.

Southwest of Brussels, in the quiet Belgian town of Vlezenbeek, the Lindemans family has been farming and homebrewing as long as anyone can remember. Commercial brewing started in 1822.
Lambic, or spontaneously fermented beers, are the beers of this region and are among the world’s rarest: they are the only beers fermented via wild, airborne yeast – no yeast is added by the brewers. Lambics come only from the Senne River valley, near Brussels – a region about 15 by 75 miles in size. The unusual, demanding, and unique flavors that come from multiple yeast strains are unmatched in the world of beer.

Founded in 1886, the Erdinger Brewery – dedicated to the brewing of wheat beer and wheat beer only – resides in the quaint Bavarian town of Erding, 30 minutes northeast of Munich. Erdinger Weissbier pioneered the awareness and consumption of wheat beer outside of the Bavarian region where it has its roots, remaining in strict compliance with the Bavarian purity law and secondary fermentation that have history and tradition in the region. Erdinger Weissbeer continues to be the world’s largest producer of wheat beer, and one of the last remaining privately owned breweries, still owned and operated by the Brombach family today.

Dolin is one of the last independent vermouth producers and still follows the basic recipes from 1821. Chambery is the only controlled appellation in France for the production of vermouth and Dolin is the last producer of Vermouth de Chambery. There is truly nothing else quite like it. The Dolin vermouths remain much closer to the delicate base ingredients from which they are made and are more akin to fine wine than the grocery store vermouths most of us are used to. Many people are skeptical about vermouth having never tasted a traditional hand-crafted expression before. There is only one thing you can do: try it!
