November 16: This week’s New & Back-In-Stock Products!

The wait is over! Here are the new products that have hit our shelves this week, plus the best sellers that are back in stock.

Available Products:

Brigaldara Recioto

Purchased by Renzo Cesari in 1928, his passion was viticulture. That passion stretched across generations when the winery changed hands; it was passed down to his grandson Stefano, who built a relationship with Roberto Ferrarini- former oenologist and professor of oenology at University of Verona, considered by many as one of the most important innovators in the history of Amarone and Valpolicella.

Stefano, former President of the Valpolicella Region Growers Association, dedicated his time during his presidency to improving Valpolicella through low yields, improved viticultural practices, careful clone selection, and modern winemaking techniques. His focus is on farming traditional grapes of Valpolicella Classico DOC, while emphasizing high-quality Corvina over Rondinella and Molinara, on his 47 ha (120 ha in total, the rest mainly consisting of olive groves, crops, pastures, and woods) of estate vineyards near the village of San Floriano- the heart of the region.

Antonelli Montefalco Grechetto

Nestled in the heart of Perugia, the astonishing 190 ha (469 acres) estate was purchased by the Antonelli family in 1881; with 10 ha dedicated to olive groves, and 50 ha covered by vineyards. Francesco Antonelli, a lawyer from Spoleto, began what the winery refers to as a”radical transformation and modernization of the planting and farming” of the property. Documentation from 1899 proves that 5000 vines per ha were planted, with red varietals showing more promise. As one of the historic wineries of the Montefalco DOCG region, the winery only cultivates varietals indigenous to their land; for white wine, Grechetto and Trebbiano Spolentino, for red wine, Sangiovese and Sagrantino.

In 2009, the winery decided to convert to organic farming and winemaking- a process they’ve used for extra virgin olive oil cultivation and production for years. It took them three years to fully convert, achieving the certification is 2012.

Big Flower Cabernet Sauvignon

Ginny Povall was born and raised in Boston, Massachusetts and began making wine at home as a hobby.  She eventually made her way to South Africa to pursue her passion to make wine on a larger scale and she planted vines on Protea Heights Farm, located in Devon Valley, about 10 minutes outside the center of Stellenbosch.  Back in  the 1940s, this was the first farm in South Africa to grow protea flowers, which is the country’s national flower and Ginny decided to dedicate a fraction of her property to protea cultivation.

Ginny arrived in the Cape back in 2008 with some basic knowledge of winemaking through evening and weekend courses at the University of California and plentiful background reading. Winning Platter 5 Stars from the outset and having to adapt to South African winemaking practices, she really has hit the ground running!  The vineyards were freshly planted in 2009 and 2010 and her winery just now coming into steady production and from her inaugural vintage, she has garnered well deserved attention.  She practices sustainable viticulture and minimal intervention throughout the winemaking process.  The Botanica range of wines have as much personality as their vibrant and charming winemaker.

Brancaia Tre Rosso 1500ml

Purchased in 1981 by Swiss couple Brigitte and Bruno Widmer, the original estate sitting atop the Brancaia hill, it was initially a place for their family to visit on holiday. The 20 ha site sported a house in desperate need of renovations and 4 ha of vineyards; a well-protected plot surrounding by deep woods, free from any neighbouring vineyards that have been sprayed with chemicals.

After their Chianti Classico (1983) won a blind tasting in 1986, it wasn’t soon after that the Widmer’s bought 53 ha more, located in Radda. During that time, their famous Il Blu was produced- a blend of Sangiovese, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Merlot. This blend didn’t meet the requirements and/or guidelines to be classified as Chianti Classico and the Widmer family found themselves part of the Super Tuscan movement, a label eventually granted by the Italian government in 1992 known as: Toscana IGT.

Vineyard work is carried out manually by a team of agronomists who work shoulder to shoulder with oenologists.  Every decision is made taking into account the importance of preserving biodiversity and respecting the vegetative-productive balance of each ecosystem.  Prompt interventions, accurate operations and a drastic reduction of treatments in the vineyard guarantee a sustainable long-term vision for Brigaldara’s vineyards, where pesticides and synthetic products are banned, in favor of a reasoned use of sulfur, copper and pelleted manure.

Burrowing Owl Merlot

Founded by Jim Wyse in 1993 and named after the endangered species that used to populate the area, Burrowing Owl’s winery and vineyards are situated in the northernmost tip of the antelope brush system (which is part of a semi-arid shrub-steppe), a low rainfall natural grassland. Despite the desert ecosystem that adjoins some of their vineyards (and not without the challenges that this can create), these grasslands contain enough moisture levels to contribute to the growing of premium grapes.

With their first vintage in 1997, Burrowing Owl originally focused on Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Chardonnay and Pinot Gris. Since then, the winery has expanded its offerings and now grow some 16 varietals across their three estate vineyards (210 acres in total). With organic vineyard practices, composting, the use of environmentally friendly sprays, and a “no harm” wildlife policy (among other things), Burrowing Owl’s environmental philosophy is best summed up by this quote from the winery: “It has been the overriding environmental philosophy at Burrowing Owl to take the long term view of our vineyard and winery practices and on a global scale we strive to do no harm.”

Chateau Les Croisille Cahors Croizillon

Cahors is, without a doubt, the most dynamic appellation in Southwest France. Recently, the area has gained momentum within the wine industry, due to the dedication and innovation of a group of winemakers in their thirties, re-energizing the Lot region’s most renowned varietal – Malbec. Château Les Croisille is one of the vineyards taking part in this revolution, by utilizing sustainable farming practices and modern winemaking techniques to create Cahors wines with finesse, freshness and balance.

In 1979 Cecile and Bernard Croisille rented an abandoned property on the Causses de Luzech to cultivate vines. Their children have since come on board to look after the 30 hectare domaine and have brought with them a sense of innovation and desire to take risks all while respecting traditional winemaking and encouraging the terroir to speak through the wines.  Château Les Croisille expanded its acreage and in 2010, converted to organic viticulture. The Croisille family focus on producing wines in harmony with the region’s unique terroir.

Chum Churum Apple Soju

Soju is a very popular spirit sold in Korea that is traditionally made by distilling rice and other cereal grains. However, since the 1960s to alleviate rice shortages, most soju has been produced by diluting high strength neutral alcohol from distilled sweet potatoes or tapioca.

One of the most trendy brands in South Korea, Chum Churum (which translates as “like the first tme”) is popular because of the added alkaline water, higher sweetness, and relatively lower alcohol content. This smoother and softer profile has been extremely successful and is especially popular among younger drinkers in South Korea.

Domaine Fouassier Melodie Sancerre

In 1966, Pierre Fouassier began to work in the family domaine after completing his studies at the Beaune viticultural college; his focus was primarily developing the commercial side of the business, a new concept for wine producers at the time. In the ’70s, Pierre’s younger brother Jean-Michel joined him at the domaine, focusing on vineyards and the winery. Pierre and Jean-Michel’s work together helped lay the foundation for the 21st century at Domaine Fouassier, along with the arrival of the 10th generation of winemakers: Jean-Michel’s son Benoit and Pierre’s son, Paul.

Benoit and Paul mange their vineyards and cellar in line with the principles of biodynamic farming and are committed to using growing methods that respect the soils, water, life forms, and natural rhythms in the vineyards to produce authentic, living wines. With 59 ha of vineyards planted with Sauvignon Blanc primarily, they’ve also began experimenting with earthenware jars as opposed to traditional oak.

Footprint Cabernet Sauvignon

The idea for African Pride Wines came in 2002, with a goal to create a range of wines that offer great value and character while staying true to South African wine style and terrior. With grapes sourced from contacted producers in Stellenbosch, Worcester, Wellington, and Paarl, the portfolio has grown since its inception and their wines are now available in over 30 countries with 100,000 cases produced per year.

Footprint, Forager, and Just Nuisance make up their core lineup and all are overseen by winemaker and shareholder Mike Graham. Some 44+ harvests under his belt (the majority in South Africa and some in France), Mike was one of the first “flying winemakers,” alluding to his stints at different wineries in both Europe and home in South Africa.

Marchand Tawse Cote de Nuits Villages

French-Canadian Pascal Marchand moved to France in 1985 when he was 22 years old, beginning his winemaking journey at Clos des Epeneaux in Pommard and becoming part of a new generation of Burgundy producers who believed that good wine starts in the vineyard. After several stints all around the world and an impressive resume of consulting, Pascal became one of the best known “flying winemakers.”

Moray Tawse is a financier by trade, serving as the vice president and co-founder of First National. After realizing the potential of winemaking in Niagara, Ontario, Moray purchased his first six acres of vineyard in 2000. Five years later, he opened Tawse winery and has since acquired 200 acres of vineyards all over the Niagara region- being named Canadian Winery of the year in 2010, 2011, 2012, and 2016.

Marchand-Tawse is a co-venture between Pascal and Moray; this duo of vignerons/micro-négociants are working with their partner-growers in the many appellations of Burgundy while embracing organic and biodynamic farming practices, crafting wines of purity and class.

Occhipinti SP68 Red

Arianna Occhipinti is a vigneron in Vittoria, Sicily who inherited her passion for the vine and wine at the young age of 16 when she attended VinItaly with her vigneron uncle of another iconic winery, COS.  Though Arianna studied oenology at the University of Milan and understands all the science and technical aspects of winemaking, for her, winemaking is all about farming.   She began making wine in her home area of Vittoria, Sicily in her early 20s.  The indigenous Frappato grape amazed her: she saw its potential for making high quality delicious red wines that were elegant and floral, lighter and fresher than the bold and ultra ripe Nero d’Avolas that had defined Sicilian wine up to that point.  She has carved out a niche and defined her style as one of finesse, elegance and aromatics.   When she released her first vintage in 2006 she was just 24 and had only one hectare of vines.  Today Her first vintage 2004 was released in 2006 when she was just 24. At the time she had just one hectare of vines which has since grown to the 18 hectares she farms today. She practices organic viticulture and takes a minimal approach to winemaking.  She hand harvests only healthy grapes, relies on spontaneous fermentation, does not use new oak and uses minimal sulfur.

Telegramme Chateauneuf-du-Pape

One cannot think of Châteauneuf-du-Pape, the most celebrated cru of the Southern Rhône, without thinking of Domaine du Vieux Télégraphe. The Brunier family is legendary in its own right, having been rooted to the enigmatic plateau known as “La Crau” for over one hundred years. The wines of Vieux Télégraphe evoke the concept of terroir in its purest form: they reflect their dramatic climate, the rough terrain that defines the soil, their full sun exposure at a higher altitude, the typicity of the varietals with an emphasis on Grenache, and of course, the influence of their caretakers, the Brunier family. For many, La Crau is Châteauneuf-du-Pape’s grandest cru.

Villiera Abraham and The Heretics Pinotage

Nestled in the Stellenbosch, Western Cape, Villiera is owned and run by the Grier family; its their fourth generation as a family-run business. Although they originally started in poultry, the family’s love for the outdoors continued to grow and soon vineyards were planted- the desired to figure out what was best to pair with their poultry grew and grew with the third generation starting the wine-side of the business in 1983.

With vineyards run by Simon Grier since the winery’s inception, approximately 170ha are managed with yields at 8 tons per ha roughly. 50% red and 50% white varietals are planted with 40% being used for Cap Classique (sparkling production), 30% red wine production, and 30% white wine production. As a certified member of the Old Vine Project, Villiera emphasizes green energy, rainwater harvesting, water efficiency, and other sustainable projects when it comes to their vineyards- all IPW certified.
