Since its early days, in 1883, Bodega Trapiche has received worldwide recognition for its relentless quest for innovation.  The winery pioneered innovations such as the introduction of French varieties, the use of French oak barrels and the production of micro-terroir wines.  The relentless determination to achieve the highest standards in the world of winemaking has resulted in Trapiche’s worldwide recognition.

Estacion 1883 is named after the train station near which the Trapiche winery was founded in 1883 and speaks to the rise of Argentine viticulture and winemaking during that period.  Barrels of wine could easily be loaded into the train wagons and this transportation method meant that Trapiche wines could easily be delivered to the global consumer market and satisfying the growing thirst for Argentine wine.

Tasting Notes

This Malbec shows aromas of black fruit, jam and licorice, with an elegant touch of smoke, vanilla and chocolate.  The medium to full bodied palate has smooth velvety ripe tannins and lots of rich dark fruit, toasty oak and sweet tobacco flavours that carry onto a pleasing finish.  This is a crowd pleasing Malbec that would pair well with steak, roast meats and grilled vegetable.

Method

These vines are grown in the Los Arboles vineyards in the Uco Valley. Though not certified organic, organic practices are followed as they aim to preserve the natural properties of the grapes by eliminating the use of chemicals, herbicides and fungicides. The grapes are hand harvested bunch by bunch to ensure that only the best fruit is selected. All the fruit is destemmed followed by fermentation and maceration in small concrete tanks for 25 days at around 23-25 deg. Fermentation is followed by a gentle pneumatic pressing and a natural malolactic fermentation. The wine is aged for 15 months in a mix of French and American oak barrels being filtered and bottled.

Really enjoyed this Malbec. Excellent value at this price point. Dark colours in the glass with aromas of dark berries and smoke. On the palate, again lots of dark berry flavours along with those smokey tones. Let the wine breathe for 1/2 hour if you can. We enjoyed around the fire pit with friends. Best to buy two bottles! Cheers
