Natural, organic and biodynamic wines are on the rise! There’s a growing movement of producers and wine lovers around the world who are advocating for a return to farming and the vineyard, away from much of the processing and manipulation of “modern” winemaking.

So, what does it mean for a wine to be natural, organic or biodynamic? More importantly, what does it taste like? Take a walk on the wild side and decide for yourself!

Workshop led by Jenny Gammon, Bishop’s Cellar Marketing & Events Manager and CAPS-Certified Sommelier. Featured wines are below:

Gut Oggau Theodora

Gut Oggau is a biodynamic wine estate in Oggau, Burgenland, Austria owned and operated by Eduard Tscheppe and Stephanie Tscheppe-Eselböck. Edward grew up making wine with his father and Stephanie’s family have a Michelin star restaurant. In 2007 the couple focused their energies into reviving a dilapidated winery, including a 200 year old screw press and abandoned vineyards. Their approach was to farm according to organic and biodynamic principles from the beginning and the results are impressive and their wines have garnered a cult-like following amongst natural wine lovers worldwide.

When the couple began to work with the wines in the cellar, they noticed that each wine had its own personality so they decided to craft labels to highlight the unique personality inside each bottle.  They created a family of wines: each wine was named and the artist Jung von Matt illustrated the faces for the labels.  The age of the character on the label hints at the growing conditions and age the the vines as well as the expected style.  The young characters are the young wines; more candid, light, energetic.  While the parents come from vineyards with a little more direct sun exposure, more ripeness producing wines with more body and power.  The grandparents come from two single vineyards of older vines that produce the most traditional wines.
