Franciacorta as a sparkling wine dates back to the 1950s when a young Franco Ziliani, winemaker at Berlucchi experimented with bottle fermented sparkling wine.  He released his first traditional method sparkling wine, called “Pinot di Franciacorta” in 1961 creating the first ever Franciacorta and other local producers followed suit.  Franciacorta became a DOC in 1967 and was elevated to DOCG in 1995, being the first DOCG in Italy for traditional method sparkling wines. Today the Franciacorta Method has some of the strictest winemaking specifications in the world in terms of grape yields, production method and ageing requirements.
Franco Ziliani and Guido Berlucchi, changed the destiny of an entire region, making it one of the most prized areas in the world for sparkling wines made with the classic method.

Tasting Notes

Aromas of peach, litchi, pear, lime flower and shortbread.  Mouthfilling and textural with a pleasing sensation from the fine bubbles.  Ripe juicy fruit mingles with citrusy acidity and is balanced by creamy autolytic notes from lees ageing making for a harmonious experience on the palate.  This is a delicious and balanced sparkling wine that can be enjoyed on its own, but one sip will have you craving Italian antipasti, cured meats or a bowl of salty chips!

Method

A total of 19 villages are entitled to produce Franciacorta.  The area follows the contours a glacial moraine; a natural amphitheater with gentle slopes and well draining mineral rich soils of sand, silt, gravel and limestone.  The climate is continental and experiences some lake influence from Lake Iseo and is protected from the cold air descending from the Alps by the surrounding mountain ranges.  The harvest is carried out by hand.

This wine is a blend of Chardonnay (85%) and Pinot Noir (15%).  The clusters are gently pressed and alcoholic fermentation happens in stainless steel vats.  The cuvée is assembled the Spring following the harvest.  20% of reserve wines (wine from previous vintages) is included in the blend to maintain a consistent high quality house style.  The second fermentation happens in bottle and the wine matures on the lees for a minimum of 24 months in bottle before disgorging with an additional 2 months aging after disgorgement.  5g/l dosage.
