Bodegas Alceno, founded in 1870, was the first commercial winery in Spain’s Jumilla region. The vines are planted at a height of 600 to 800 meters in rocky and chalky soils. DO Jumilla is located on a high plain in the eastern region of Spain, acting as a transition zone between the Mediterranean coastal area and the high central plateau of Castile-La Mancha.
Tasting Notes
This is an aromatically and texturally complex Sauvignon Blanc as a result of barrel fermentation and lees aging in wood. Pronounced variteal aromas of a warmer climate Sauvignon like stone fruit mingle with secondary aromas from oak and lees. The aromatic profile carries onto the palate that is at once rich and fresh, showing great balance, depth and length in the mouth. The aging in the oak provides longevity, making this a wine suitable to lay down for those who enjoy white wines with some bottle age. Enjoy this with rish seafood dishes, pastas, aromatic and spicey grain and rice bowls, mild curries and white meats.
Method
Made from low yielding and high elevation grown Sauvignon Blanc grown on a combination of sandy-loam soil (lower plots) and stony and calcareous slopes in the upper vineyards. The best grapes are hand harvested in early September, destemmed and placed into the press where a cryo-maceration is carried out at 10-12 º for 6-8 hours followed by a gentle pressing. A static racking is carried out and the juice is fermented in new 500L French oak barrels, the wine is then racked off the gross lees and the wine rests on the fine lees with batonage being carried out once a week for three months
