This is the largest of the Northern Rhone appellations and creates mostly red wines. The best come from the terraced vineyards, while the bulk wines hail from the flat, valley floor.
This is the appellation that put the exotic and aromatic Viognier grape back on the map. These are rich and viscous white wines that command high prices, but by the nature of the grape’s naturally low acidity these wines are not meant for long term ageing.
Otherwise known as the “roasted slope”, this region only makes dark, spicy and structured red wines. Up to 20% white Viognier can be co-fermented with Syrah to add perfume and complexity. These wines are elegant and ageworthy.
