Ca’Marcanda is Angelo Gaja’s (of Barbaresco, Piemonte) estate in Bolgheri, southern Tuscany. Gaja saw the potential in Bolgheri for producing top quality wines back in 1994 and he established a winery there in 1996. Today the estate extends over an area of approximately 80 hectares of vineyards in Bolgheri’s DOC appellation. Although Angelo, who is now in his mid 80s, is still involved in the family’s wine businesses, Angelo’s children are at the helm of his estates.
Tasting Notes
Intense aromas of candied citrus fruit, ripe peach and some green notes keeping the tropical fruit in check. There is a sea breeze quality hovering in the background. The palate echos the citrus and lush stone fruit from the nose, there is slight roundness midpalate, salinity and minerality and fresh green edge that keeps the wine lively and refreshing. Excellent concentration and terroir driven wine. Enjoy with seafood, sushi, salads.
Method
Although the Bolgheri DOC appellation is universally recognized for its great red wines, traditional production in this territory was actually white and rosé wines. In fact, the initial set of DOC production regulations that went into effect in 1983 only permitted these two categories.
The name of this wine, meaning “sea-view” was inspired by the vineyard’s proximity to the sea breeze. The term is often used by the coastal hoteliers to entice potential guests (even though their rooms may only offer a limited view of the Mediterranean!). The vineyards used for Vistamare actually enjoy a panoramic view of the Tuscan horizon and their grapes grow not far from the coast and enjoy the saline air. A blend of Vermentino (70%), Viognier (15%). Chardonnay (10%) and Sauvignon Blanc (5%) The varieties are handpicked and and fermented separately. Some of the juice ages for about 6 months in neutral oak barrels before blending.
